EN71-8: 2011 Published

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has recently published EN71-8: 2011 Activity Toys for Domestic Use. It shall supersede EN 71-8: 2003 + A4: 2009 and is expected to become a mandatory standard offering a presumption of conformity to the new Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC, once a reference to the EU Official Journal is published. Conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn by March 2012 at the latest.

The Challenge:

  • Paddling pool, climbing frames, playhouse, and tents are now included in the scope.
  • The amount of loading for stability and strength test is now defined by the number of users, determined either by position (Swing, Slide, Rope) or area of the platform.
  • The finger entrapment requirement for activity toys, intended for children aged 3 years and above, is revised to prohibit any slots and gaps that allow the entry of a 7mm diameter rod, unless a 12mm diameter rod can also be inserted.
  • Swing - Impact test and geometry assessment introduced for swings that are intended for children aged 3 years or above and the bottom of swing element is at a height of less than 1000mm from the ground. The impact test applies to all swing elements unless the weight of swing element is less than 1kg, or when 3 sides of falling protection are provided on double seats swing.
  • Slide - A new test method is introduced to assess the angle of the sliding section, as well as the angle between the sliding section and run out section. The requirements are 60 degrees, and 120 to 150 degrees (subject to the height of the starting section) respectively.
  • Paddling pool - Pools with a maximum water depth of less than 400mm are defined as paddling pool. Strength requirements are introduced for pools with rigid walls and further requirements from EN71-1 apply to all paddling pools.
